John Howard Association of Illinois

The John Howard Association recently toured Stateville Correctional Center. The prison has too many inmates, too few rehabilitative programs, and a 19th century architectural curiosity deserving of demolition.

Stateville’s staff deals with its institutional handicaps as best it can. The warden seems committed to making the prison work. But it is evident that Stateville suffers from many of the same problems as other prisons around the state.
