Visiting approximately 20 facilities per year, JHA staff and volunteers observe, collect data, and speak to inmates, staff, and administrators about living and working conditions inside the prison. In addition, JHA has started to use paper-based surveys to collect anonymous quantitative data from significant numbers of inmates and staff. JHA also utilizes information received from its Prison Information Services program to build a holistic view of realities at each facility. Learn more about our prison monitoring work here.
JHA then issues written reports on facilities and systemic issues as appropriate, disseminating them to adult correctional and juvenile justice officials, legislators, other individuals in positions of authority, the media, and the public at large.
