Mission

The John Howard Association (JHA) independently monitors correctional facilities, policies and practices, and advances reforms needed to achieve a fair, humane and effective criminal justice system.

 
 

Who was John Howard?

The John Howard Association of Illinois was founded in 1901, and takes our name from an 18th century English humanitarian who is considered to be the father of the prison reform movement.

The Young Professionals Board of the John Howard Association of Illinois will support JHA’s mission to independently monitor correctional facilities, policies and practices, and advance reforms needed to achieve a fair, humane and effective criminal justice system in Illinois by:

  1. Encouraging young professionals to prioritize systemic criminal justice reform among humanitarian concerns

  2. Engaging the support of the community and our social and professional networks in this effort
